The first time I heard about Burb Cannabis was when they brought Ricky Powell to Fortune Sound Club for his “World Famous Slide Show” where he went through a grip of his past work and shared some context behind the images.
As we all sat quietly in the dark, he shared stories with us about what it was like being an artist in New York in the 80s, walking down the street and running into Basquiat and Warhol, going on tour with the Beastie Boys, shooting pics of Run-DMC. What a time. That event showed me that Burb is a brand that’s about the culture and the local community, as well as the bud.
A month and a half later, COVID-19 hit and changed the world. It was cool to hear that even though we’re living in these crazy times, Burb is still about the culture and the community. Up until May 8, 2020, Burb Cannabis pledged that they will be donating 100% of their profits from any apparel sales directly back to the community.
Funds raised will benefit the following groups:
- Take-away food baskets for all unemployed Fortune Sound and Say Hey Cafe staff
- Rent contribution for DIY performance space, Dolly
- Donation to Atira Women’s Foundation (DTES)
- Donation to PACE Society (helping sex workers in the DTES)
- Donation to OPS (Overdose Prevention Society in the DTES)
- Donation to Villa Cathay (a non-profit senior home care in Strathcona Chinatown)
They hit up a bunch of creative friends including Gman, Dickson and Pearl, Katrin and Leila to help spread the word and showcase some of the merchandise available to cop. Check out some images and support local where you can; we’re in this together.
